Unsafe Spaces (excerpt)

Synopsis:

Vanessa, brought up as a strict Catholic, insists that the local school take her daughter, Gloria, out of the sex ed class.  In addition, she is collecting signatures in an effort to having a raft of books in the school library removed due to their potentially damaging effects on the students.

Meanwhile, Gloria is struggling with the realisation that she may in fact be gay.  She seeks out the advice of Father Ahearn, who seems kind and receptive.

She also forms a bond with the school librarian, Nicole, which feels illicit, as the library is a place of which her mother strongly disapproves.

Under the n=banner of protecting her child, Vanessa ultimately forces her into a corner that culminates in a catastrophic outcome.

‘Unsafe Spaces’ challenges us to reconsider the whole notion of ‘safety’ within a modern society.
