Synopsis:
Blair is a person who needs people. Bobby, her husband, doesn’t.
For him, the world begins and ends on 22nd November 1963, with the assassination of JFK.
The couple met when Bobby, as a young writer, was riding the crest of a wave. The tide is now out.
He wants a baby. She’s not so sure. They are interviewing for the 3rd bedroom in their share-house.
The second is occupied by Gavin, an ageing hippie folk-singer who works nights and has never been seen.
They interview Toni, a pot-head sex worker who’s never heard of JFK.
Unimpressed, Blair insists that they interview Satoshi Nakamoto who, as it turns out, is the creator of Bitcoin . Or is he?
It is New Year’s Eve. Bobby, highly mistrustful of Satoshi, visits Toni in an attempt to convince her that she is the ideal candidate for the share house.
Meanwhile, Blair waits up for Bobby, who never comes home. Devastated, in tears, she is consoled by Gavin, whom she meets for the very first time. He questions her, and her secret is out.
The following morning, Toni, Blair, Bobby and Satoshi all meet up again, but the dynamic is completely altered.
Is there a way out of their terrible predicament?
Toni/Blair/Bobby/Bitcoin was inspired by a host of stories from share houses.
The phenomenon of the share house – the randomness of its human cargo – the complex web of its interconnections and misconnections – all speak eloquently of the strange richness and, at the same time, the malaise that afflicts our modern sensibility of the world.
The play is a heightened attempt at encapsulating – in dramatic form – the need that people have for people and the strange and boundless ways in which this can be expressed.
