Synopsis:
Laila was conceived on 9/11 – to a Black mother, Holly, and a White father, Hersh, whom she meets on the subway.
Unbeknownst to Hersh at the time, Holly is married to a Black man who, unbeknownst to her, has just died in the 9/11 attack.
In a modern riff on the picaresque novel, Laila takes us through the challenges and traumas of her 19 years on this earth, her own life reflecting the many upheavals and reversals that we as a society have endured over that time.
In a story that culminates in both a very private and a very public death, Laila is forced to come to terms with who she is – and, of course, who she isn’t.
