The Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy

Synopsis:

Gideon, a lonely man who has never had much success with relationships with women, has been seeing Jean, a psychologist, on a weekly basis for 10 years

The consultations. whilst somewhat combative, are always interesting, and yet he never seems able to move past the unfortunate relationship he had with his mother.

Given the lack of progress, Jean decides that she needs to wean him down to once a month on the way to terminating therapy.

Gideon, aghast at the prospect of termination, constantly harasses her, even turning up at her home.  Desperate for comfort, he returns to the arms of Monique, a sex-worker he used to visit regularly.. Meanwhile, he has fallen in love with a woman he met on a plane.  Alas, it turns out that she, Helen, shares both her name and her appearance with his mother.  It is at this point that Jean realises she has feelings for Gideon.
