Synopsis:
The Anne Frank story told through the eyes of the participants from all three sides: The Frank family, their helpers and their ultimate betrayer.
In a piece charged with tension, the story takes us beyond the point where Anne Frank’s diary ends, dramatising the relationship between her father, Otto, and the man who betrayed the family, Anton.
Character Breakdown:
The play is a 6-hander: 4 females, 2 males.
OTTO 56
EDITH 44
MARGOT 19
BEP 57
ANTON 27
KITTY 20s
Set:
Centrally, US, is a staircase leading up to a bookcase filled with books. At CS is a small, circular table. There is also a desk-cum-table with two chairs.
The action throughout is fluid, moving straight from one monologue to the next, sometimes overlapping.
Lighting states reflect this fluidity, with ‘entrances’ and ‘exits’ often achieved through lighting alone. In other instances, one character may ‘walk through’ another’s scene.
Such details will be left to directorial discretion.
KITTY remains in a separate ‘world’ from the others, an effect that may be achieved by whatever means the director sees fit. She will often be seen retrieving, opening or reading a letter.
ANTON, initially, is off to one side, a shadowy, malevolent presence.
Running-time: 100 minutes.
Production History: Not yet produced.
