The Enemy Within

Description

Synopsis:

In the wake of the Great War – the most horrific conflict ever to ravage the face of the earth – the leaders of the four great powers gather in Versailles to hammer out a treaty and to devise a strategy in order to ensure that such an atrocity never takes place again.

In the alternative world of the play, however, their solution to war is not the League of Nations but, rather, the enemy within.

What the war has shown them is that the most effective way in which to unite people is to galvanise them against a common enemy.

Step by step, they piece together the various attributes that this enemy must exhibit.  In the end, what they come up with is an entity that they decide to call a Jew.

It is only then that we realise that we have been observing a world in which no Jews have existed, which is why, for example, Czar Nicholas is at this meeting.  There has been no Russian Revolution because there has been no Karl Marx.

Proud of their achievement in having agreed on such a brilliant strategy, they toast to a future of peace and prosperity.
