The Broken Places

Synopsis

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of almost 1,200 Israelis and the torture, rape and kidnapping of hundreds of others.

During that attack, many Hamas fighters were killed, but 25 survived with significant injuries, requiring hospitalisation.

They were treated in an Israeli hospital and, when word of this leaked to the outside world, many Israelis were outraged.

The play centres on two patients:  One an Israeli soldier injured during the attack and the other an injured Hamas fighter.

Through their interactions with a series of health professionals, hospital staff, legal professionals and, ultimately, each other, we get a graphic sense of the profound depth of feeling generated by the conflict.

The play dramatizes the complexity of the situation – the fact that there are no simple answers – leaving the audience to ponder the many challenges of reconciliation and healing.
