Synopsis:
On their 10th wedding anniversary, Aurora Steinman informs her husband, Grover, that she is in fact from another planet, far across the cosmos.
Realising that their planet was about to be swallowed by a supernova, her civilisation was able to transform itself into pure consciousness, no longer subject to the laws of time and space. She has thus been able to descend into Grover’s consciousness, as well as the consciousnesses of all the humans in his community, so that to them she appears as a real human being.
At first, Grover thinks it’s a joke, but she’s able to convince him otherwise. He feels utterly betrayed, and starts seeing a psychiatrist, a Dr Birnbaum, who is convinced that he is suffering from a unique psychotic disorder. Birnbaum insists that he must ‘leave’ his ‘wife’, which he does.
This forces Aurora to confront human suffering for the first time in her ‘life’, with dramatic consequences.
‘Star Cross’d’ is a profound piece that demands of us that we reconsider our preconceptions regarding love, relationships, emotions, thoughts and reality itself.
