Synopsis:
Verity O’Halloran, a photo-journalist of some standing, has just returned from a tour of duty in Iraq, where she was embedded with a military unit.
She comes armed with a cachet of photographs of the death of a young soldier.
The photographs – daunting, unnerving, spellbinding – are a graphic reminder of the human cost of war, a war that is being largely ignored in the homes of the nations that are waging it.
The potential of these photographs to swing public opinion against the war does not go unnoticed. But there is one problem: The soldier whose death we are witnessing is identifiable. His name is Jack Schraeder.
The only way, then, that the photos can be published is with the permission of his next of kin.
Verity goes on a mission to convince Jack’s father, Bill, that it is in the public interest that the photographs of his dying son be splashed across the pages of a widely read magazine.
In so doing, Verity gets to meet Jack’s family – gets to understand, in real terms, what it means for a young man to be ripped from the heart of his family.
In a taut, riveting narrative that pits private rights against public good, we begin to develop an understanding of the true nature of heroism – not so much in the theatre of war but, rather, on the battlefield of everyday human survival.
