Description

Synopsis:

A young Australian woman, Mimi Grant, has been imprisoned in a South East Asian country for drug-running.  Despite her protestations of innocence, she is sentenced to death by hanging.

The Australian PM, Terence Bull, and the South-East Asian President, William Lim, are old friends, but all attempts at diplomatic intercession are unsuccessful.

Mimi’s case is taken up by Bull’s daughter, Greta, who is a barrister.  But Mimi insists that she wants the execution to proceed in order to reveal to the world the brutality of the Lim government and, indeed, all government.  In order to up the stakes, she manages to get herself pregnant to one of the guards, so that Lim will now be executing a pregnant woman.

Mimi pressures Greta into issuing a public statement on her behalf that is highly critical of Lim’s government, as a result of which Greta is also jailed on a charge of sedition, which is also a capital offence.

It is at this point that realpolitik – another word for the corruption that is inherent to all forms of government – takes over.
