Synopsis:
Caroline has just been chosen to become the nation’s first Minister for Loneliness.
Having high standards, she doesn’t suffer fools and, consequently, suffers from loneliness instead.
She has never forgiven herself for her divorce, which took place when her son, Ennis, was four years old. As a result of that divorce, Ennis developed an eating disorder, putting on an enormous amount of weight. In recent years, however, he embarked upon a fitness program, losing all that weight, but the fitness program has more or less taken over his life.
He meets a young woman, Amber, in a bar. Unbeknownst to him, Amber is his mother’s PA. Their working relationship, never ideal, deteriorates to the point where Caroline more or less forces Amber to resign.
Amber retaliates, with catastrophic results.
None of these people seem able to break free of their old habits, habits that have proven to be self-destructive. But they persist – much as they do in the world at large.
