Synopsis:
It is 1948, at Burgholzli Psychiatric Hospital in Zurich.
A young woman has been admitted – Maria – who believes herself to be the Nannerl, the sister of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Once there, she meets Eduard Einstein, a schizophrenic inpatient who just happens to be the son of Albert Einstein.
Maria finds great comfort in playing the piano, but the psychiatrist in charge, Dr Closset, regards the uncontrollable passions evoked by music to be a threat to sanity, and favours, instead, the rule of silence. However, countering his influence is a psychiatric nurse, Heisenberg who, though lacking in confidence, has great compassion for his charges.
Through the agency of music, and enabled by the distortions of time central to the Einsteinian view of the universe, Maria and Eduard come to develop a deeper understanding of the nature of love, loss, sacrifice and sanity.
