Synopsis:
Judgement is Part 2 of a trilogy of free-standing plays titled ‘Trinity’. The other two parts are ‘Judgement’ and ‘Ascension’.
The London Underground bombings have just taken place.
Alice, a vicar, has just lost her daughter Bethany in the bombings. Along with her ability to forgive.
Fatima has lost her son, Mohammad, a suicide bomber. Along with her desire to keep on living.
A week later, Georg Toloki, a Hungarian plumber, is arrested for a sledge-hammer attack on Michelangelo’s Vatican Pieta. (This event is based on an actual event that took place in 1972.)
In the course of the attack, he has been heard to cry “I am Christ, returned from the dead!”
Struggling to piece together Georg’s motivation for this attack, his defence attorney, Gabriella Tuzzi, slowly unravels a bizarre relationship between these three individuals.
What begins as a somewhat surreal whodunit gradually deepens and transforms itself into a profound, disturbing and ultimately apocalyptic journey into the dark heart of human compassion.
