Description

Synopsis:

It is Salzburg, 1829.

Mozart’s sister, Nannerl, living alone in a neglected apartment, is visited by Mozart’s son, her nephew, Franz, who has brought with him Vincent and Mary Novello, who are on a ‘Mozart pilgrimage’.  Vincent is a music publisher and musician, and he and Mary are very active in organising musical soirees in London.  Through the London Philharmonic Society, they have collected 80 pounds by way of a gift to Nannerl.

They are more than keen to hear every word about her famous brother that drops from her lips, but she is now 78, blind and embittered, and they get a little more than they bargained for.

Whilst Nannerl firmly believes her brother to’ve been the world’s greatest musical genius, sent by God, she has never forgiven him his genius, which saw her – a brilliant musician in her own right, relegated to the role of nurse to her ageing and cantankerous father, Leopold.

What emerges through the evening of their visit is a tragic journey of female disenfranchisement, of yearning and, ultimately, of lost love.
