Description

Synopsis:

Anwar O’Grady, a slick Hollywood producer, has Brangelina lined up for a blockbuster romcom, ‘Cupid – The Movie’.

The script is honed to within an inch of its life, and perfect in every respect but one:  The meet cute.

O’Grady wants a more original one, so he co-opts the services of Miranda Shapely, a hot young writer fresh from a recent success with her screenplay ‘Carbon Dating’.

Not wishing to take any risks, however, he teams her up with veteran script doctor (Doc) Rip Kranston, a curmudgeonly booze-hound of the first order.

As we enter the world of the screenplay in development, however, strange things start to happen.  Miranda, fresh from a relationship breakup that has left her filled with self-doubt, submerges herself in the world of the meet cute, but Rip has larger fish to fry.

Jimmy Olsen (his grandfather was George Reeves’ stunt double) is the gofer, doing his utmost to oil the wheels of creativity, Cupid makes his presence felt – even Aristophanes makes an appearance – and it seems that everyone is starting to fall in love with Miranda.  Everyone, that is, except Rip.  Or is he?

To complicate matters further, Miranda’s ex- – Chilli Monterey – turns up when she least expects it.

The whole thing ends in a finished screenplay, a pregnancy and a wedding – though none of these arrives in quite the form that was expected.

Meet Cute is a genre film that turns the genre on its head.  And back again.

To a luscious soundscape steeped in the Big Band Swing of Glen Miller, we are treated to a story that puts a generous helping of wit and a sprinkling of erudition back into romance.
