Description

Synopsis:

Nathan Leopold, an embittered, struggling playwright, is contemptuous of the work of his peers, particularly Eugene Calvary, who enjoys enormous success.  His long-suffering wife, Bobbie Franks, an aspiring actress, reminds him that his fate is in his own hands, if only he would come down off his high horse and write material that is ‘entertaining’.

He contacts a radio station that runs a vox pop program called ‘Critters’, in which listeners attend a night at the theatre, then deliver their review on air.  His review of Calvary’s latest play, being as virtuosic as it is vitriolic, earns him a permanent gig, which he conducts in the name of Richard Loeb, wearing a hood and adopting the persona of The Hanging Judge.

He soon becomes highly influential and, through his rave review of his own play, finally achieves success as a playwright.

It is at this point that the plot thickens.
