Synopsis:
Adam, a streeet beggar, bails up Gershon, a rabbi, and holds his feet to the fires of guilt. Finally, Gershon offers him the job of shabbos-goy – a Gentile who is able to carry out all the functions forbidden to Jews on the sabbath.
What follows is a complex story involving Joe, a pawnbroker who is often pestered by Adam, Mary, his wife, who has an extraordinary lineage, and Sophie, a congregant at Gershon’s synagogue who was in a relationship with Joe many years earlier.
As the various connections unfold, each of the characters is tested in some way – morally, religiously, as a human being
