Beckett’s Grave

Synopsis:

Monsieur Didier – by all accounts an important personage – has just died.

Claude and Bruno, two gravediggers at the Cemetery of Montparnasse, have instructions that an existing coffin is to be removed in order to make way for that of Monsieur Didier.

But whose coffin?

Their deliberations are interrupted by the arrival of a heavily pregnant Woman, together with her “dog”, Horatio.

The Woman claims to be the daughter of the man whose coffin they are about to exhume.

The exchange is becoming rather heated when Kohn – an attorney at law – arrives.

Kohn represents the Estate.

Precisely whose estate, however, remains a matter for conjecture.

What ensues is pure Beckett.

Or perhaps it is impure Beckett.

Or perhaps it isn’t Beckett at all.

It’s said that ‘perhaps’ was his favourite word.

But nobody’s quite sure.
