Synopsis:
Ascension is Part 3 of a trilogy of free-standing plays titled ‘Trinity’. The other two parts are ‘Judgement’ and ‘Pieta’.
Lea, a playwright, has just had a smash hit success with her first play, Never Say Hardly Ever.
Derek, an agent who has done deals with everyone from Howard Hughes to Osama bin Laden, agrees to take her on as a client.
But her next stage work – Immorality Play – will be the real test of her staying power.
In the midst of gathering a theatrical team around the project, however, Derek becomes aware of the fact that something is rotten in the state of Denmark.
Something, that is, under the floorboards. Something dead.
Enter Peter Grimes, a pest-controller with more to him than meets the eye.
As the production unfolds, each of the players struggling to carve out a power niche in the human maelstrom that is theatre, Peter somehow slowly asserts his presence in ways that nobody could have predicted.
Old secrets are uncovered as new ones are forged and, in the process, innocence lost.
Ultimately, in a shattering climax to a play of profound darkness and wit, we are brought to a deeper understanding of the meaning of truth and innocence in a world that has spun out of control.
