Synopsis:
Frank Kameny was a highly-respected American astronomer at a time when the US, at the time of the space race, was desperate for the services of astronomers. But there was one problem: He was gay.
At the time, with homosexual activity regarded as a crime, it was felt that homosexual men, being vulnerable to blackmail, posed a security risk. Consequently, they could not be granted the kind of security clearance that would allow them to be involved at the cutting edge of space research.
Having been arrested for ‘lewd behaviour’ in a public convenience in Washington DC, Frank found himself unemployable and, almost by default, became one of America’s earliest and most prominent advocate for gay rights.
In ‘Waning Gibbous’, he tells his story.
